Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
