Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to contest specific calls from the official, echoing the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
