Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
