Trumpism's most revealing and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the nation's leader began displaying the public his intentions for a gilded ballroom two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of deaths due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and rising, and presently research projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have dared – really, no former commander would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the White House in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous the richest Americans, nearly all of which have business with the government.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' to 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness about him since they are atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically not the story of a mighty king appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape undercover officers. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine concerns compassion for other people, especially for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and protecting. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if someone steals your outer garment you should give him your sweater as well.
The evident and clear fact that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a kind of profound affection focused on the needy is what has always made the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality requiring to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Best Among Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to assist in constructing the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged voters to participate in numbers during minor elections. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the best parts within national heritage.
We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?
The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the highest within national tradition, just as Christianity is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Christ. In both situations does it imply acting as if the most negative regarding America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it means both modesty and conviction, a mixture that serious US believers should be comfortable with.
