Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
