European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
