Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.

International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences

Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
