A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
